Look Inside this Book...
owls and night journeys
I followed the owl. That’s when all my curiosities began.
I would not ordinarily have followed an owl at night into a dark forest—I have far too much sense for that—but this was no ordinary owl, and it was no ordinary night.
It was a night filled with darkness.
Aren’t nights always filled with darkness, you ask?
Yes, but not this sort of darkness. This was a darkness I’ve never felt before. A screaming darkness. A darkness to swallow the world.
This was the night I followed the owl.
Neither was the forest ordinary, but at that time I didn’t know.
The forest was on the edge of a swamp.
And the swamp was--
I would not remember the owl until later.
But, as I put one foot in front of the other and walked into the swaying pines and grey elms that swallowed me up, I had only one clear thought in my somnolent mind:
Follow the owl.
